The Green Leaf Tourism Scheme (GLTS) is part of a national pilot for sustainable tourism in the UK. Participating accommodation establishments complete a self-assessment questionnaire which measures their commitment to environmental issues such as encouraging car-free tourism; use of local produce; efficient energy usage; and recycling and resource use. They have also signed up for a training programme which encourages them to find new ways of making their business more sustainable.
The GLTS is intended as a 'stepping stone' towards the more rigorous Green Tourism Business Scheme (see below).
The following establishments are members of the Green Leaf Tourism Scheme during 2008:
B&Bs
Self-catering
Camping and caravan parks
Campus accommodation
Tourism businesses that want to go the extra green mile towards sustainability can join the Green Tourism Business Scheme. The leading sustainable tourism certification scheme in the UK, the GTBS has over 1400 members. Businesses opting to join are assessed by a qualified grading adviser against a rigorous set of criteria covering a range of areas, like energy and water efficiency, waste management, biodiversity and more. Congratulations go to Sycamores B&B for being the first business in the Winchester district to sign up to the scheme. Go to www.green-business.co.uk to find out more.
