All the properties promoted by Winchester City Council are assessed and have been awarded a quality rating by one or more of the two national agencies, the AA and VisitBritain* (formerly the English Tourism Council), who operate a harmonised system for grading accommodation.
All properties have been visited by a qualified assessor and awarded a rating based on comfort, cleanliness, facilities and services. Special gold and silver awards are granted by VisitBritain to serviced accommodation achieving the highest levels of quality within its rating. The only exceptions are the larger hotel chains which operate their own internal assessment schemes.
> For detailed definitions of each accommodation rating visit the EnjoyEngland or AA websites.
In the unlikely event that you find cause for complaint, we strongly advise you to take it up with the accommodation provider at the time of your stay while they have the opportunity to put things right.
Complaints can also be directed to the tourist information centre in writing stating at which establishment you stayed, when and the nature of the complaint. The staff at the centre will record and investigate complaints, but please note that they have no statutory control over establishments in their method of operation and cannot become involved in legal or contractual matters.
The AA and VisitBritain carry out assessments on an ongoing basis throughout the year. The RAC has recently closed its accommodation assessment scheme.
The diamond ratings that were previously awarded to guest accommodation (B&Bs, guest houses etc.) are gradually being replaced by stars. You will therefore find some entries on this website with diamond ratings and some with star ratings. The new star ratings are designed to meet customers' greater expectations of quality and facilities, and higher ratings are more difficult to achieve than under the old diamond scheme. On this website you may find, for example, guest accommodation that previously held a 4 diamond rating has since been reassessed under the new standards as 3 stars. It does not necessarily mean that the standards have dropped.
